Ferragamo family expands into Brunello with Pinino acquisition

By Kristen Oliveri

The Ferragamo name has long been synonymous with Italian excellence, first in fashion, now increasingly in fine wine. In a move that underscores both tradition and innovation, Il Borro Toscana, led by CEO Salvatore Ferragamo, has acquired Azienda Vinicola Pinino, a boutique winery located in the coveted Montosoli hills of Montalcino.

The acquisition is a strategic leap into the Brunello di Montalcino world, marking a new chapter for the Ferragamo family's wine ambitions. Pinino boasts 21 hectares of land, including 16.2 hectares under vine with 7.6 dedicated to Brunello, 5.4 to Rosso di Montalcino, and 3.1 to Sant’Antimo. With vineyards nestled in one of the most prestigious subzones of Montalcino, the purchase positions Il Borro squarely among the elite in Italy’s high-end wine sector.

I had the privilege of attending an intimate wine tasting in New York City with Salvatore Ferragamo, where he spoke candidly about the family’s vision. “This is an act of passion to grow the portfolio with a Brunello,” he shared, glass in hand, with the calm confidence of someone honoring his heritage while forging a bold new path.

Founded in Valdarno di Sopra, Il Borro released its first wine in 2001, a Bordeaux blend Super Tuscan, and now cultivates 210 acres producing 12 distinct wines. The Pinino acquisition is more than an expansion, it’s a deepening of commitment to excellence. The family will retain renowned enologist Stefano Chioccioli as consulting winemaker, ensuring continuity and quality.

As the Ferragamos continue to evolve their storied brand, their foray into Brunello not only enhances their prestige but reinforces their role as stewards of Italian craftsmanship, both in the vineyard and beyond.
